Software Engineer (Backend)

Job Description

Ucombinator builds software for leading companies across the USA and Europe, and provides engineering talent to Sri Lanka’s top technology firms. Our teams work across a range of business domains including artificial intelligence, supply chain, finance, industrial automation, and e-commerce. We’re expanding our development team and looking for engineers who want to work on systems that operate at real scale.

The Role: 

• Design, build, and maintain backend services using Java and Spring Boot
• Manage and optimize database systems — schema design, performance tuning, and data integrity
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in Jenkins for smooth integration and delivery
• Write automation scripts in Shell and Python to remove routine operational work
• Provision and manage AWS infrastructure using Terraform and Chef
• Containerize applications with Docker and maintain orchestration workflows
• Monitor application and infrastructure performance, respond to alerts, and resolve issues before they escalate
• Work alongside QA, frontend, and DevOps engineers in a cross-functional team

Requirements

• A degree in Computer Science or equivalent
• 2+ years building production enterprise applications
• Strong expertise in Java and the Spring Boot framework
• Experience designing RESTful APIs and microservices
• Solid database skills — SQL tuning, data modelling, and backup strategies
• Hands-on experience with AWS services (EC2, RDS, S3, Lambda)
• Experience with Jenkins, Docker, and container lifecycle management
• Infrastructure as Code experience with Terraform; configuration management with Chef or similar
• Strong scripting skills in Shell and Python
• Familiarity with Scrum Agile delivery and quality engineering practices
• Clear communication skills
• Kubernetes, Kafka, Oracle databases, or monitoring tools (CloudWatch, Datadog) would be an added advantage
