Senior Software Engineer (Backend)

Ucombinator builds software for leading companies across the USA and Europe, and provides engineering talent to Sri Lanka’s top technology firms.

Our teams work across a range of business domains including artificial intelligence, supply chain, finance, industrial automation, and e-commerce.

We’re expanding our development team and looking for engineers who want to work on systems that operate at real scale.

The Role:

Design, build, and maintain backend services using Java and Spring Boot
Own database performance — schema design, SQL tuning, data modelling, and backup strategy
Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in Jenkins across development, QA, and production
Provision and manage AWS infrastructure as code using Terraform and Chef
Containerize applications with Docker and maintain orchestration workflows
Monitor application and infrastructure health, respond to alerts, and resolve production issues proactively
Set the technical direction for your area and raise the engineering standard across the team
Work alongside QA, frontend, and DevOps engineers in a cross-functional Agile team

Requirements:

A degree in Computer Science or equivalent
4+ years building production enterprise applications
Deep expertise in Java and the Spring Boot stack
Strong experience designing RESTful APIs, microservices, and enterprise integrations
Solid DBA skills — SQL tuning, data modelling, and backup strategies
Proven experience with AWS services (EC2, RDS, S3, Lambda)
Hands-on with Jenkins, Docker, and Infrastructure as Code using Terraform
Configuration management experience with Chef or similar tools
Strong scripting skills in Shell and Python
Demonstrated ability to debug production issues across distributed environments
Familiarity with Scrum Agile delivery and quality engineering practices
Kubernetes, Kafka, Oracle databases, or monitoring tools (CloudWatch, Datadog) would be an added advantage
