Senior Backend Engineer

Zenteur Spaces   Colombo • Part-time

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our founding engineering team and take ownership of the backend architecture and development of a new real-time technology platform (Native App).

This is an early engineering role. You will work closely with the product/design team and other engineers to build the backend from the ground up and help establish the technical standards for the product.

What you will be responsible for

You will take a leading role in designing and building:

  • Core backend architecture and services
  • User, worker and account systems
  • Booking and job lifecycle systems
  • Real-time dispatch and matching systems
  • GPS/location and live tracking services
  • Real-time communication using WebSockets
  • Billing, pricing and time-tracking systems
  • Payment gateway integrations
  • Notifications and background processes
  • Authentication, authorization and security systems
  • Admin and operational APIs
  • Data, reporting and analytics foundations
  • Third-party API integrations
  • Scalable infrastructure and backend services

Required technical experience

Our planned backend architecture will primarily use Go, so strong professional experience with Go/Golang is required.

You should also have strong practical experience with:

  • Go / Golang
  • PostgreSQL
  • Redis
  • REST API development
  • WebSockets / real-time systems
  • AWS or another major cloud platform
  • Docker
  • Git and CI/CD
  • Authentication and authorization
  • Database architecture and optimization
  • API security
  • Third-party API integrations
  • Background jobs, queues or event-driven systems
  • Production monitoring, logging and error handling

Experience with Java, Node.js/TypeScript or other backend technologies is an advantage, but our primary backend direction is Go.

Real-time & high-scale experience

WORK will depend heavily on real-time systems.

You should be comfortable thinking about problems such as:

  • Thousands of users and workers operating simultaneously
  • Multiple requests arriving at the same time
  • Preventing two users from being assigned the same worker
  • Live GPS updates
  • Real-time job status changes
  • Network failures and reconnection
  • Duplicate requests and transactions
  • Accurate time and billing calculations
  • Payment failures and recovery
  • Race conditions and concurrent operations
  • System reliability during sudden traffic increases

Experience building high-concurrency or real-time applications is highly valuable.

Leadership & ownership

This is not simply a coding position.

You should be able to:

  • Make sound architectural decisions
  • Break large systems into manageable engineering tasks
  • Guide other engineers technically
  • Review code and maintain engineering standards
  • Mentor junior and mid-level developers
  • Work closely with mobile engineers and product/design
  • Identify technical risks before they become problems
  • Build systems that are maintainable, secure and scalable
  • Take ownership of problems without needing constant direction

Who we're looking for

We're looking for someone who has built real production systems, understands how backend systems behave in the real world, and is comfortable being involved from the early architecture stage through production.

You should be someone who asks:

“How do we build this properly?”

rather than simply:

“What code do I need to write?”
